What a composite deck costs in Knoxville

What moves the number

Options and what they usually add

Railing type: Aluminum about $60 per linear foot; composite $30–$60; stainless cable $150–$240 with aluminum posts. On a high deck, railing can be a third of the total.
Height: A second-story walkout adds longer posts, bracing, more railing, and a longer stair: typically $30–$60 more per square foot than a ground-level deck.
Stairs: $1,400–$2,600 per straight run in composite with closed risers; landings and turns add to it.
Tearing out the old deck: $2,000–$5,000 for a 200 to 400 square foot wood deck including disposal, less if the frame is being kept.
Lighting: Low-voltage post caps and riser lights, $600–$3,000 depending on count; a typical package with transformer is about $1,200.
Permit fees: City of Knoxville charges 0.55% of job value plus a $35 plan review; Knox County about $50 plus $5 per $1,000. Under $150 for most open decks, itemized on the quote.

The ten-year math

Wood is cheaper on day one. That’s the only day.

Pressure-treated pine installs for about $15 to $18 per square foot here. It also needs cleaning and restaining every two to three years at $900 to $1,500 a pass in Knoxville’s humidity, and by year 12 to 15 it’s gray, checked, and getting replaced. A capped composite deck gets hosed off twice a year and is still under warranty at year 25.

A resurfacing keeps the posts, beams, and joists and replaces boards and railing for roughly a third to half of a new deck. We probe the ledger and every joist at the visit; if a screwdriver sinks in, or the ledger was nailed instead of bolted, we quote the rebuild and explain the difference on paper.
