Services
Five things we do, and do all day: new composite decks, resurfacing, railings and stairs, covered decks, and repairs. Every job is built on ground-contact lumber to the Knox County deck standard, fastened with hidden clips to the manufacturer’s spec, and inspected three times before you walk on it.
Ground-level platforms, elevated walkouts, and multi-level decks with built-in seating, in Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, or Deckorators.
Knoxville lots slope. A lot of them slope hard, toward a creek or a ridge, and the back door is often a full story above the yard. We design each deck around the grade, the view, and how you actually use the space: a grilling zone by the kitchen door, a dining area, stairs where the yard traffic already goes.
The frame is where the money is well spent. We use ground-contact rated (UC4A) pressure-treated posts, beams, and joists on hot-dip galvanized hangers, flash the ledger with metal, tape every joist top with butyl, and space joists at 16 inches (12 on diagonal or picture-frame runs) so the composite stays stiff for the life of the warranty.
New composite boards and railing on your existing frame, when the frame deserves it.
Most treated-pine decks in Knoxville built after about 2004 have a frame that will outlive the boards by a decade or more. The boards gray, cup, and splinter because they take the rain and sun; the joists underneath stay dry and straight. If a screwdriver can’t sink into the joists and the ledger is sound, we can resurface.
We strip the old boards, check every joist and hanger, sister anything questionable, add blocking where the composite calls for it, tape the joist tops, and lay the new boards with hidden clips. Two or three days, and usually a third of a new deck’s price. If we find rot at the ledger or posts, we stop and show you before quoting a rebuild.
Code-height guards, straight stairs, and lighting, in aluminum, cable, or composite.
Any deck more than 30 inches above grade needs a 36-inch guard with pickets a 4-inch ball can’t pass through, and stairs of four or more risers need a graspable handrail. Wood rails are where most older Knoxville decks fail inspection, and where they get wobbly first, because the posts rot at the notch.
We install powder-coated aluminum systems (Fortress, Westbury, Trex Signature) with surface-mount posts through-bolted to blocking, stainless cable for lake and ridge views, or matching composite rail. Stairs get closed risers, stringers at 12 inches on center for composite treads, and low-voltage riser lights if you want them.
A roof over the deck for July shade and March rain, tied into your existing roofline.
Knoxville gets roughly 50 inches of rain a year and about 37 days over 90 degrees. A covered section turns a deck you use on nice weekends into one you use every evening. We build gabled and shed roofs on 6x6 posts with the framing sized for the extra load, matching your shingles, with a tongue-and-groove or beadboard ceiling, a fan, and recessed lights.
Screen it and you have a porch with no mosquitoes. Add an outdoor kitchen wall and it becomes the room you didn’t know the house was missing. Covered structures always need a permit and usually a plan review, which we handle.
Loose ledgers, sunk footings, rotten stair stringers, and composite boards that were installed wrong the first time.
Not every deck needs replacing. We fix the specific problem: re-bolt and flash a ledger that was only nailed, replace a heaved footing, rebuild a stair run, or re-gap and re-clip composite that was face-screwed with no expansion room and has buckled in the heat. Repairs are quoted at the visit and usually done within the week.
The number one cause of deck collapse. Through-bolted and flashed to the 2018 IRC.
Heaved or sunk footings in clay, posts set in dirt, replaced with proper bases.
Rotten stringers, loose posts, and guards under 36 inches brought to code.
Buckled, face-screwed, or mildewed boards re-laid with correct gaps and clips.
